I started dropping the slide on an empty chamber in 1976 (my first 1911). I also loaded a round into the tube and dropped the slide on that for years, but it didn't take many years before I started breaking extractors (2) and wearing out the internal parts of that 1911. The hammer started following the slide down. Bad news. I ended up having all the internal parts replaced by a compentent gunsmith. I asked him why I was breaking extractors and why my parts wore out, and he told me exactly what Mas told me. I've never dropped the slide on a pistol since, and guess what? I've never broken another extractor.

I am now caught in a quandary. After hearing the argument about how the Bill of Rights is actually worded, and following the logic, I have moved all the way to the right on the legitimacy of gun ownership for all. But what can/should be done about truly unhinged individuals who will predictably turn their guns on their communities? I can only think of dramatically increasing highly sophisticated surveillance on practically everyone only in order to prevent such tragic incidents. Some kind of Minority Report type thing. And I don't see that as a bipartisan rallying moment.

I drop my slides dry just for this guy *meow* I don’t have a single one of my three friends who were armor, both military, and law-enforcement that has ever told me that they have an extractor or lost an extractor due to droppin the slide dry. He never covered the 5:30, 6:00. I have 20 acres and carry @ 6:00. Not for people but wild animals in the area. The gun is accessible when needed and not in the way while working. Also I use a S&W Shield, for the gun to fire, you must fully grip the gun and release the manual safety, actually 2 safeties on the gun. You have to really screw up to get a miss fire.

I was trained to pull the trigger (after clearing the gun at matches) engaging the disconnector which takes the impact rather than the sears on a 1911.

I’ve found that 45 is a softer-shooting round. Heavier. Especially in a heavy gun like a 1911. I do prefer 9mm, though…especially in a heavy gun like a Beretta M9.

Due to the design of a nineteen eleven, You're never supposed to Thumb down the hammer. In people's minds a hammer cocked back on a pistol is dangerous. A nineteen eleven Cocked and locked. Is extremely safe. Along with the grip safety it's one of the safest designs ever.
